THE STYLE GUIDE

MY TOP TIPS + SUGGESTIONS
FOR WHAT TO WEAR FOR PHOTOS

Introduction.
Whether it’s your first or your millionth time, I know it can feel kind of daunting picking what to wear for photos. Here are a few guidelines I’ve put together to help you look and feel your best for our upcoming session. These are my top tips and suggestions that I’ve found works best from trial and error from past shoots.

Here are a few things to consider when deciding on what to wear:

Colors.
Choosing the right colors will single-handedly make the biggest difference in your photos. You want what you wear to compliment the environment we shoot in and your partner. I love recommending neutrals and earthy tones. Mostly any neutral color will compliment whatever environment we shoot in. Neutrals aren’t just grays and browns, there are neutrals of every color (mustard yellow, forest green, navy blue, burnt orange, etc). Fluorescent or overly bright colors draw attention away from faces and can reflect onto your skin resulting in unflattering skin tones (pinks, oranges, and reds especially). If you have dark or olive-toned skin it may be an exception with the right conditions, but otherwise try to avoid wearing anything that is bright and overly colorful. If you really want to wear something that is pink, orange or red just check with me!

Setting.
Think about the conditions and locations we’re going to be shooting in and plan around it. If we’re going to be hiking around the mountains, bring shoes with good grip so that you don’t twist an ankle. If it’s going to be hot, bring clothes that can breathe more (I recommend wearing darker colors if you’re worried about sweat stains showing in the photos). If we are shooting on a sandy beach, it may look off if you’re wearing shoes. If it’s freezing cold outside, bring lots of layers and warm clothes with wool socks and boots. Be as comfortable as you can be.

Movement.
Like I mentioned above, make sure that the materials you wear will keep you comfortable during the shoot not only for temperatures but also for being able to move around in. If you're in brand new jeans that are still stiff and tight, you might be distracted during the shoot trying to make sure everything stays in place as well as lets you sit and run and move around in. It’s fine to go shopping for new clothes for the shoot beforehand, but I recommend bringing clothes that are "broken in" so that you'll be as comfortable as possible. I also love when people bring clothing or accessories that can show movement by catching wind, it adds energy to the photos and it looks freaking gorgeous!

Patterns.
Avoid big, loud, chunky, crazy patterns or logos. The smaller or more subtle, the better! If the pattern is too loud, it will distract from your faces. Flannels are always a good choice in my book! I usually try to avoid pairing too many patterns together because it makes the photos feel a bit hectic and distracting from your faces and the location. Ultimately, try not to match colors or patterns but to always compliment each other’s outfits.
